Hello, all.
Last year I sent a note that I was amazed at how few photos there
were on the internet of endophytic Odonata in the act of oviposition,
and that is still true. I just performed a Google Image Search on
several species of Lestes and found surprisingly few photos of them
ovipositing, not even a single one in some species. I was trying to
test the hypothesis that Lestes congener usually oviposits in dead
stems, most other North American species in live stems, and the
internet was inadequate for such a purpose.
It must not be easy to get these photos, as I note I have rather few
myself, but I hope all of you who photograph Odonata will think of
this, as you get a lot of information from a photo of an ovipositing
pair, and photos of 25 ovipositing pairs from all over the range of a
species would probably give a good summary at least of the substrates
that it uses.
Several people sent me photos of ovipositing odonates last time I
mentioned this, which were much appreciated. I'm not asking for more
photos, just trying to generate an interest in taking them and, for
those of you with internet photo sites, posting them.
Dennis
