Dear All,
I wanted to call attention to a website that I have posted at http://
content.denison.edu/cdm4/browse.php
This site is part of Denison University's Digital Collections and
called the "Schultz Insectary". It currently contains 805 images of
insects from 12 orders and includes 286 images of odonates. Each
image is accompanied by a "data label" giving the specimen's taxon
and locality. Most of the images were taken with a digital camera
but some of the older photos were scanned from 35 mm slides.
When you click on the address above you should get the first page of
photos in the Insectary, which are arranged alphabetically by species
name. You can leaf through the pages or do a quick search by species,
family or order by using the search box at upper right. Or you can
choose "advanced search" from the tool bar at the top. This will
give you the ability to search by common name or location also, but
be sure to disable the collections other than the "Schultz
Insectary". If you don't, and search for "tiger beetle" , you may
also get images of tigers (or beetles) from the Asian art
collection. The same is true if you use the search box at the upper
right of the pages. It would be more efficient to search by
"Cicindela". However, searching by the common name of a dragonfly or
damselfly species will usually take you to the right place. Once you
get the image you want, you can make it larger by clicking on the
page icons on the tool bar. You can change the center of an image
at 100% by clicking your pointer on the small image at upper right.
The Odonata photos are somewhat biased toward damselflies and
especially Enallagma, which I study. I will appreciate any
corrections or comments. And let me know if you cannot access the
collection.
